Swag Bags to Fight Sex Slavery: Freeset

This weekend, I’m attending the National Youth Workers Conference in San Diego. It’s a big show with lots of flash, but with even more excellent people who care about mentoring young people.

Like any conference, there are lots of handouts involved: books, music downloads, and materials of all kinds delivered at registration or as “seat drops” during conference sessions. This year, the best gift in the goody bag was the bag itself.

Each conference attendee received a colorful bag (mine is pictured below) from Freeset. These bags were assembled from old advertising signs that would have otherwise been thrown away, so they are environmentally friendly. This means each bag is unique, and because they are from Kolkata, India, they have writing, colors, and pictures on them that create a completely fresh and funky vibe for us foreigners. As cool as the bags are, Freeset’s story is what makes NYWC’s choice such a good one.

Kolkata’s large sex district, an area known as Sonagacchi, is home to women who are forced into prostitution by human trafficking or poverty. Any attempt to help these women must include sustainable employment options, and Freeset is making it happen. If you’re in charge of hooking up the promotional products for an event or business, consider working with Freeset.
